Say Goodbye to Working 24/7: Self-Care is Key to Success

Trust me, I’ve been there. You’re building your empire, putting 100% of your heart and soul into growing your business…with nothing left over for yourself. You eat, sleep and breathe business. You miss family dinners and school plays, or when you’re physically there, you’re mentally drafting an email or playing out your marketing campaign. It feels like it’s all work, all the time.

Many entrepreneurs—and especially female entrepreneurs—believe that working nonstop is a necessary part of building a successful business. As though over-working is a rite of passage. If you’re not working all day every day, well, you’re just not working hard enough and your business is destined for failure. We wear those 90-hour work weeks as though they’re badges of honor, wondering how much sweat and tears it’ll take before we can consider ourselves successful.

Well, I’ll share a secret with you that I learned in my experience building two successful businesses: self-care is KEY to your success, and here’s why:

1. If all you do is work as hard as you humanly can, eventually you’ll burn out or blow up. The vast majority of humans cannot sustain a work-all-day-everyday mentality. Eventually, you’ll snap…and when that happens, it can be a big enough setback that all the time and energy you invested into your business is completely negated.

Ask yourself, is it worth making [insert annual revenue goal here] if it takes a negative toll on being an invested mother or partner? Is it worth getting that promotion if your physical health deteriorates as a result of all the added stress?

2. Better self-care will make you a better businessperson. Think about it: you’re getting enough sleep and feel rested and ready to carpe diem, you’re exercising and those feel-good endorphins are pulsing through your body, you’re eating nutritiously and your brain is functioning at maximum capacity, and you’re making time for your family and friends, surrounding yourself with people who boost your self-esteem and confidence.

Studies show that working more than 50-hours per week results in ZERO productivity gain, and this is because you have less energy, less happiness, and less ability to focus and think analytically. Self-care sharpens your blade, so to speak, so you can really make the most out of the time you DO invest in work.

I know it’s not easy to step back, slow down, and allow yourself time and space to just breathe. But by becoming the best possible version of yourself, you can show up to the office stronger and smarter—and show up stronger and smarter for your family and loved ones, too.
